New feature: fandom self-identification

The settings page now has a tickybox for self-identifying with fandom (settings>general>"I'm part of fandom. Hooray!"). Maciej says this information will be used to create a popular/fandom page and extra fields in our public profiles. Eventually, according to the explanation of the tickybox on the website, there will be a fandom-specific settings pane.

This makes me feel somewhat uncomfortable. Will this self-identification be used to keep my bookmarks off the main popular and recent pages? Because I'm not at all cool with the segregation of fandom and "normal/real/default people".

That's not really an unequivocal "no", but that does ease my worry some. Thanks.

I doubt he'll do anything with the information that we might object to without talking to us about it. So far in general he's been pretty transparent about his plans and open to input, and he's smart enough to know that if he does anything we don't like, we'll notice and make noise about it.

This was asked on Twitter, and he says not. He wants to make a "popular/fandom" page, which will aggregate just the bookmarks of people who self-identify as fandom, but it won't stop the main popular page from aggregating them as well.

Maciej here - I have no intention of filtering those pages. I get a kick out of the different kinds of links that appear there.

Do you know, it's so refreshing to see a website that actually listens to what its users has to say. I think I could really grow to love Pinboard the way I used to love Delicious.

Actually, that's the very reason why I already love Pinboard more than I ever did Delicious. ;)

I've not really started to use it very much. I moved both my accounts over and have been playing with it a bit, though.

What it really needs is a FireFox plugin like the official Delicious one. Damn, that thing was bloody useful. I can't really find any that compare for Pinboard, but things are still relatively new, so I'm willing to wait and just use FirePin in the interim.

Have you seen this tutorial? It's not as simple as just installing an extension, but it gives you a sidebar and some useful buttons.
